5 Top Reasons to Become a Certified Executive Coach

5 Top Reasons to Become a Certified Executive Coach

With over 25 years in the industry, we have seen many different reasons why people choose the path of executive coaching. What distinguishes an executive coach and why are they needed? Check out our reasons why.

After whittling it down, these are the top five reasons that we’ve found as to why people choose to get our certification. To get more information on what an executive coaching certification looks like click here.

1. Adds Tools to Your Toolbox

One of the biggest reasons to become a Certified Executive Coach is simply to add more tools to your tool box. If you are thinking about becoming an internal coach, you can add value to not only your own professional career, but also to your organization’s, especially when it comes to improving employee retention and creating a positive Impact on Business.  Oftentimes, the people that go through our coaching certification program also begin their own independent coaching service. This is often a second career option, opening many doors to many different opportunities.

2. Creates Self-Awareness and Empathy

Becoming a coach changes your entire perception and heightens your awareness. We tell our coaches in training that once they begin our program that they will begin to ‘live like a coach’.  What this means is your self-awareness muscle begins to develop. You begin to respond with empathy and listen to others in a way you never did before. You become a witness and a conduit to what the person sitting in front of you needs at that moment. You are able to ask the hard questions with compassion because you are really listening with awareness.

3. Generates Empowerment, Motivation and Inspiration

When you become an executive coach, not only do you feel empowered, you now hold the key to empower others. With empowerment, comes the ability to motivate and inspire others in the direction of their own personal development. As we guide clients through our coaching process, we address our client’s weaknesses head-on and explore ways in which they feel empowered to make different choices in their behavior that result in a positive Impact on Business. You can empower, motivate and inspire others to get to their own personal summits once you become a Sherpa Executive Coach.

4. Integrates Your Full Self

We tend not to be fully integrated as human beings. Learning how to become a coach helps us integrate many aspects of ourselves, making our behavior more effective. Coaching helps us create and choose instead of being run by our emotional/physiological and behavioral reactions.

New neural pathways = More behavioral options

Working as a coach helps us form new neural pathways, and there are many strategies: we ask clients to take a new perspective, we have them vision a different future, and we help them look directly at issues rather than avoiding them. All of these are ways to create new potential neural pathways that can, with practice, be developed into default habits and responses. We also provide a structure for accountability (we all know that we’re much more likely to do something when we have made a promise to another and we know they will follow up) so that the actual practice, the doing, takes place, for the coach and their client.

5. Helps Create New Solutions and Choose New Behaviors

We are programmed for fight or flight response first. Our reptilian brain – also known as the limbic system, is the earliest part of the brain.   When we have “gone limbic,” our brains and bodies are being pumped with adrenaline and cortisol —designed to have us NOT THINK but TAKE ACTION. If a saber-toothed tiger attacks,  you want your limbic system in charge. You want your feet to move stronger and faster than usual. In corporate life, no saber-toothed tigers, just annoying emails and too much traffic. The limbic system still gets pumped up when we don’t need them to be, in this state, we aren’t able to really think, create, or choose, we just react. Learning how to become a coach can help you identify your own weaknesses and replacement behaviors to change them. You also learn how to work with you clients to help them address and adjust their weakness behaviors as well.

One of the students from our last Executive Coaching Program at UGA said,  “I hear your voice in my head to stop my weakness behaviors in motion.  I used to go into things without thinking and say whatever first came to mind. Now I can catch those feelings before I take the steps to listen, think, then communicate.  This rewiring of my brain has impact not only on my behavior but of those around me.”

The brain’s neuroplasticity allows for change and for skillful coaching.  Becoming a coach is one of the best ways to facilitate change for yourself and others.
