Lessons From an Intimidator (Part 1 of 4)

Part 1

Rachel is president of a Strategic Business Unit (SBU) for a “household name” manufacturing company. Her SBU  is responsible for $70 million of the company’s revenue. She comes from Israel, the only country in the world with a mandatory military service requirement for women. Rachel served her time in the Army.woman-intimidate-2

When she assumed the presidency of her SBU, I led a ‘Team Leader Assimilation’ program for Rachel and her top leadership team. Part of the program involved Rachel introducing herself to the team, with some personal insights. The first words out of here mouth were: “I’m from Israel. I’m from the military, and I’ve killed people.”

Now, think about it for minute. What would you think if you heard your new boss say that? I am sure one of your reactions would be FEAR. What would you call Rachel’s behavior? It would be safe to say: “intimidation”. That is what happened. Rachel had 15 people who were petrified of working for her.
